“If we don’t get that right, we don’t get anything right.”

A priest I know through Facebook, an admirable man of God, wrote the following on Friday morning:

When a culture decides to tolerate the destruction of some members of the human family for arbitrary reasons it shouldn’t come as a surprise that some people who lack the full use of reason might create their own arbitrary reasons for why some lives can be destroyed.

About twelve hours later, in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, President Obama had this to say:

This is our first task — caring for our children. It’s our first job. If we don’t get that right, we don’t get anything right. That’s how, as a society, we will be judged.

Let us pray, as the body of Christ, that our Commander in Chief is a step closer to acknowledging the dignity of all human life, from conception until natural death.  Pray with me that America as a whole will follow President Obama’s (very correct) assertion to its fullest and most logical conclusion – life for all.

In Christian history, unlikelier things have happened.

I thought the exact same thing. I tried to explain to a pro-choice friend that I felt the same grief over abortion that I feel over the latest tragedy. She just didn’t get it.

  2. My brain has gone here so much in the last few days. There are no words for the horror in Connecticut, but there are also no words for the horror in abortion clinics all over the country. I read those words of the President’s, and I was stunned to hear him say what I think, but not have it apply to all children. I love your response. Yes, let’s pray for him and for our country to stop the killing of all children in the places that they should be safest, like in the womb and at school.
